The Problem with Having 3 Only Children

It appears that we have three only children in the same family. They have become very aware of us and our attention. Whenever they see one of us holding oneo f the others, they look at us like, “Who is that sitting in my seat? Who has my mommy?” They are starting to notice there are other occupants in the house and sometimes they find it fascinating and sometimes they find it annoying.Â

/No more Mr. Nice Guy. Remember last month I wrote about how patient and mellow Kimball was? It seems that he read what I wrote and it offended him. He changed his mind. He has decided that nice guys finish last and he wants to be first. He has become much more demanding and vocal about his likes and dislikes. Speaking of vocal, he has starting babbling and jabbering all the time. Once he found his voice he started using it all the time. He loves to talk, squeal and laugh. His hair is also growing in really fast. It’s blond, so it’s hard to see, but every morning it seems longer than the day before. Kimball has rolled from his belly to his sides, but he’s gotten so big that he gets stuck on his side. He is also not a big fan of tummy time. Sometimes he will cooperate and push up on his arms like a good boy. He CAN do it, he just chooses not to. A lot of times he will lie down and suck his fist and take a little rest. And as for that fist, he is more in love with it than ever. He likes to make out with it. When I hear him on the monitor, “mmmmmmslurp slurp suck suck mmmmmmmm” sometimes I think he’s got a girl up there. Kimball is sleeping 8 hours at night, and mommy and daddy are sooooo happy. Kimball’s new trick is he likes to do the Riverdance. He puts his arms down, makes a really intense face with his eyes really wide, and goes to town with his legs. It’s so cute. I knew our kids would dance….

/Brinlee laughs and giggles all the time. She thinks it is absolutely hilarious when I change her clothes or diaper. We can also make her laugh by imitating the happy noises she makes. Brinlee uses her legs all the time kicking the toys on the play mat or just kicking in the air. Her newest trick is kicking the bottle out of my hand when she is done eating. She has also learned to burp and blow (I’m sure Adam has been training her at night). She will burp and blow it right in my face. Gross. She’ll also hold milk in her mouth and wait until we get close enough before she coughs and spits it in our faces. Not pleasant. Brinlee rolled over 3 times in one day and hasn’t done it since. She likes tummy time. The mat we usually put her on has flowers that light up. She likes to eat the flowers. Apparently they are delicious because she keeps going back for more. Brinlee is our sleeping champ. She was the first to sleep 8 hours and has been sleeping 12 hours for a few weeks. We LOVE that. Her hair is growing back in really fast, and like her brothers, it’s coming in blond. It doesn’t show up in pictures yet. She seems to be the most aware of the other two. Her crib is right next to Sawyers, and when he fusses, she pops her head up and cranes her neck trying to see where the noise is coming from.

/Sawyer’s talking is mostly squealing. He laughs and giggles a lot and is still an incurable flirt. He has a whole harem of girlfriends, and the numbers grow daily. Maybe it’s the spit bubbles he’s started making that win them over. Sawyer is also sleeping 8 hours at night, so recently we have been getting more sleep (thank goodness. Sleep deprivation torture works. I’m proof). He has rolled over once, and it was actually the same day Brinlee did. He loves to touch things. He swats things like Brinlee and Kimball do, but he is more likely to feel and handle it. When he is going to sleep he runs his hands back and forth across the bed. When we hold him he likes to hold fingers or feel your shirt or rub your arm. He grabs and holds the toys on the playmat more than he kicks or swats them. Sawyer’s blond hair is growing in fast. I’m a little sad that it won’t be red. I cut a little of the red that’s left in the back and put it in his baby book.Â

/As for mommy and daddy, our quality of life has improved significantly since they started sleeping at night. We switched back to a 4-hour schedule last week, and for the first 4 days we had some night wakings, but hopefully that is a thing of the past, and we are on track for sleeping through the night. Until they start teething. Or just change their minds. I have been working on little projects. I made plaster prints of their hands and feet last month. I’m going to mount them in shadow boxes with pictures. I’ve been working on their baby books. My most significant project so far is I sanded, primed, painted and mounted letters for their names. Now we just have to hang them in the nursery. My next project is organizing all their photos in albums. I’m not a scrapbooker. I put photos in albums. Cute albums. But that’s it. Another milestone for me is that I have been caring for the babies alone Monday – Friday from 7 am-12. I was terrified at first. The first week did not go well, but it’s gotten a lot better since then. I actually enjoy the time alone with the babies. The next big step was when daddy went out of town for 5 days. I was alone with them from 8 pm to noon every day. Not only was I worried I might have 3 babies going berserk in the middle of the night, but what if something serious happened? Adam couldn’t get there in any quick fashion. I was solely responsible for their health, safety and welfare. That was a huge weight on my shoulders. It was physically and emotionally exhausting, but we made it.

/Once again I have created a makeshift photo studio to try to record our babies’ growth. Hopefully soon we can go to a professional studio.

/Parents Partnered for Preemies left some disposable cameras at the bedside so the nurses could take pictures for us. I finally got them developed. This picture is when Brinlee is a few weeks old.
