I believe I am a patient man. In fact, I think April would tell you that I am a very patient man. Kimball decided to test his dad’s patience today during his diaper change. As soon as I pulled the dirty diaper out from under him (the clean diaper was already in place under the dirty diaper), he decided to poop again. And not just a little. In fact, he overshot the clean diaper and got it all over his blankets that we had just provided to him yesterday (apparently, he thinks projectile poop is funny). So I clean him up again, get a new clean diaper in place again and take out the second dirty one. I turn around to throw the old diaper away just to find that he has pooped again. So once again, clean diaper in place, clean Kimball, pull out old diaper and this time I’m just not looking to see if he is pooping again. I’m just tying up that diaper as fast as I can.

/At this point, I thought I had won the war, even though I lost the intermediate battles. Apparently Kimball didn’t get the ceasefire notice. After his diaper change, April held him for approximately 45 minutes and then went to hold Brinlee and I took over Kimball. About two minutes into holding him, I got the sensation. A nice, warm sensation on my chest. So in my mind, it goes something like this: diaper, doubled up blanket, shirt, undershirt…there is no way he got through all that! But he had and upon putting him away (I like a kind father continued to hold him for 15 more minutes before he went to time-out) we discovered that his diaper was undone. He went to bed with a smile, knowing he had won today’s battle (or, like I believe, his mother sabotaged me during her hold time and undid his diaper).Â

/But, he is as cute as can be, so I really can’t complain.Â

/Kimball covers his face in either embarassment or so that Dad can’t see him smiling after his deed is done.

/All three of them continue to have episodes of apnea and bradycardia (stop breathing and heart slows down) but it is to be expected in their age group. Good news in that all three of their brain scans came back and showed no bleeding in their brains, a common thing for preemies as early as they were.

/Brinlee is also very cute and was held for a long time by April today. She continues to do very well. The nurses continue to just be in love with her and her little attitude. I changed her diaper today, and unlike Kimball, she behaved. I’m trying to teach the kids that poopy diapers = mom’s turn and non-poopy diapers = dad’s turn to change. She’ll be coming off the IV tomorrow as she is getting enough food through her tube feeding. Both Kimball and her will have their first try at breastfeeding on Monday.

/Sawyer’s remarkable turn around continued today. He went from a four to a two liter setting on the high flow cannula today and was doing very well. Not only has he lost the chest tube, but his arterial IV (to monitor blood pressure on a consistent basis) and two other IVs. And the best part of it was that April was able to hold him during his feeding today and he loved it. Now that he has lost all his excess equipment, we are able to get more accurate weights and believe he is starting off at 3 lbs 7 oz.
